Food you chuck away with your rubbish doesn’t go harmlessly back into the ground like you might think. It’s either burnt or ends up in landfill, where it rots and releases methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. This is super bad for the environment!
Food waste is never actually waste as it can be sent to special processing plants to be transformed into electricity, or compost for farmers. If your council recycles food waste, make the most of it and recycle all your inedible bits and pieces (egg shells, coffee grounds and the like)!

– Use lemon or essential oils to keep your caddy smelling fresh
– You can recycle coffee grounds, egg shells, fish and meat bones, gone off food and fruit/veg peelings
Not all councils collect food waste. Check the map on our homepage to see if yours does!
If food waste isn’t collected in your area, you could always try home composting, but if that’s really not your thing, for now you’ll have to throw it in your rubbish bin. The good news is that there’s loads of ways you can reduce how much you waste in the first place! Check out our top tips and start making those small changes which really will make a big difference.
