Waltham Forest

Yay! Waltham Forest Council collects food waste for recycling into energy.

Does the council collect food waste from houses, and flats in converted houses?

Yes – but not separately. It is collected mixed with garden waste, in your brown bin. However the council is currently running a pilot in a small area of Waltham Forest to test separate food waste collections, and will consider whether to extend this once the pilot is complete.

Does the council collect from purpose-built flats, and flats on estates?

Not widely – but the council recently trialled a food waste collection service for properties with communal bins and now plan to include some more properties on the scheme. If your property is included, you’ll receive a small kitchen caddy and should empty it into the grey food waste bin in your communal bin area.

What about flats above shops?

No.

Can I get a caddy from the council?

Yes – the council provides internal kitchen caddies to households with a brown bin service. Order replacements here: https://walthamforest.gov.uk/node/2677

Do I need to use liners? And what kind?

Yes – please only use newspaper to line your caddy, or compostable starch liners, not plastic bags or biodegradable bags.

Are the liners available for free?

No – but they can be bought from most supermarkets around Waltham Forest.
