Southwark
Yay! Southwark Council collects food waste for recycling into energy.
Does the council collect food waste from houses, and flats in converted houses?
Yes – but not separately. It is collected mixed with garden waste, in your brown bin.
Does the council collect from purpose-built flats, and flats on estates?
No.
What about flats above shops?
No.
Can I get a caddy from the council?
No – but the council provides an external brown bin for food and garden waste, into which you can put compostable bags of food waste. Contact the council to get a replacement brown bin if you don’t have one by visiting http://www.southwark.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling and going to the ‘Replacement bins and sacks’ section.
Do I need to use liners? And what kind?
You can put food waste into a compostable liner before putting it outside into your brown bin, or you can put it in loose. If not using compostable liners, you may want to put a sheet or two of newspaper into the bottom of your brown bin to keep it clean.
Are the liners available for free?
No – but you can buy them from supermarkets and shops around Southwark.
